Welcome to this week's newsletter. If the line up this week resembles August 31, 2008, you are right! Hurricane Ike continues to cause problems including wiping out delivery systems for the LIVE broadcast of TravelTalkRADIO. We will broadcast BEST of TravelTalkRADIO program this Sunday!

In last few newsletters we have talked about the upcoming events that we will be participating in. The themes include, Tourism and Investments in South Korea, Tourism and Peace in Holland, Tourism and Emerging Countries in Egypt and our own First Ladies Tour  project in Albania and Kosovo. Below, we have listed each conference with links to the organizers' Web sites. These conferences and summits are important to the travel  industry as they often set the pace for future tourism in destinations that have not been visited previously or are opening their borders for the first time to a whole new generation of travelers.

Most of these meetings and summits are held at conference centers and resorts that can accommodate large groups. However, the tourism and peace summits that I am involved with have been very fortunate to be supported by one of the  leading hospitality universities in the world, Stenden University, based in Holland. From the top officials of the school to the dedicated professors, Stenden (formerly known as CHN University) has been supporting tourism and peace forums for a number of years. My first experience at Stenden was at the Tourism4Peace Forum when the University hosted the forum in 2006. Stenden, located about 4 hours by car from Amsterdam, is in a very quaint northerly Dutch town called Leeuwarden.

Stenden University formerly known as CHN in Leeuwarden Holland.

One of the most remarkable things about the journey from Amsterdam to Leeuwarden, especially by motorcoach, was the visibility of the waterways and seeing the brilliant engineering of water control by the Dutch. Nobody understands water like the Dutch engineers! It was breathtaking to see so much managed water.

Once you arrive at Stenden, you will find a completely self-sufficient campus including accommodations offered at the
Hotel Restaurant Wyswert. The university students operate and manage the entire hotel operation including offering fine dining where award winning chefs train the next stars in our industry.

The Stenden University provides an incredible backdrop for conferences and meetings. The curriculum  is focused on hospitality which allows students to experience and study the science of tourism. In fact, Dr. Omar Moufakkir offers a high level look at culture and the effects of tourism on peace. Other innovative tourism courses include classes in communications and distribution offered by the Media and Entertainment department.

I'll never forget my first trip to Stenden University. It started with a fun-filled motorcoach with my colleagues from the Tourism4Peace forum who are from Egypt, Israel, Jordon and Palestine. We began our conference in The Hague, an appropriate venue for the important work Tourism4Peace is doing in the Middle East. The Tourism4Peace Forum will return to Stenden this coming January, where the conference will again tackle the challenging issues of secure borders and open doors.  Please click onto the Tourism4Peace Web site and learn more about this tenacious group of leaders who are role models to the world and certainly to me.

I am happy to say I will be traveling again to Stenden in October where I will be participating in the media panel at the International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT). The theme for this conference is Bridging the North-South Divide through Sustainable Tourism Development.

Since the inception of our programming in 2001, we have adopted the IIPT Credo for Peaceful Travelers. I have always encouraged our listeners to go to the site and print out the principles for responsible travel. Louis D'Amore, the president and founder of IIPT, will be on our show next week to talk about the conference. I hope you can join us.

We hope that our many listeners in the wake of Hurricane Ike are now seeing the sunshine and we sincerely hope that your challenges are manageable.
Warmest regards to you all and safe travels.

Sandy Dhuyvetter
