Welcome to this week's TravelTalkMEDIA Newsletter
Thank you for joining us! This week on TravelTalkRADIO, we will take our first hour to explore the world of opening new markets to travelers. How these 'transformational' countries create attractive tourism products and how they get noticed is our focus. Our lineup of guests are truly the movers and shakers in the industry. Working together, we will explore their efforts to help educate and facilitate a network of professionals who work along side each other to create destinations that are exciting, safe and sustainable.

In the second hour, we will have some fun walking down memory lane talking about the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock. We'll also visit with Chef Link in New Orleans, and we'll catch up with the Smile Ambassadors from Orlando who are bouncing from one attraction to the next for the next 67 days. And finally, come meet a special company that offers the best of East Africa: Martin Warioba representing OMONG'WE (pronounced Omong way) Travel and Tour joins me at the end of the second hour to talk about the beaches and safaris and more in Tanzania, Africa.

Here is more information on this week's programming.
A True Patriarch of Travel and Tourism
Bob Whitley, President and CEO of the United States Tour Operators Association

He claims to have helped Noah load the ark. Well, figuratively speaking anyway, that’s about how long Bob Whitley has been involved in the travel and tourism industry. He was a keystone in the founding of the Travelers Conservation Foundation that evolved into the modern day Tourism Cares organization. Bob has also been actively involved in the American Tourism Society for many years. He’ll share with us a little history lesson and also describe the new international collaborative effort between ATS and Tourism Cares, two great organizations that are joining forces in a project designed to promote and transform a well-deserving, but little known, tourism destination.  Continued

The American Tourism Society – Happy 20th Anniversary!
Phil Otterson, President of the American Tourism Society (ATS)
You could say “Tauck talks with TravelTalk” as Phil fills us in on the big next ATS project. This one involves a multi-organizational effort this fall seeking to create stronger tourism relations with a pristine and beautiful ocean resort area in northeastern Germany that was locked away behind the Iron Curtain for 40 years: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
(p.s.: Can you believe that the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is November 9th?!)

Tourism Really Does Care
Bruce Beckham, Executive Director of Tourism Cares for Tomorrow
Tourism Cares is a non-profit organization comprised of US travel industry executives whose primary purpose is simply to give back to tourism by working to restore and refurbish those destinations needing a helping hand. This coming September 11th, as a day of both service and remembrance, about 300 of these executives will don their work clothes and roll up their sleeves to help spruce up the National Mall in Washington, DC. And in late October, their first international volunteer effort will occur in conjunction with the American Tourism Society: Tree planting in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northeastern Germany. This outfit really does care.  Continued

Where in the world is Meck-Pom?
Tobias Woitendorf, Deputy CEO of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Tourism Association in Northern Germany
Located on the Baltic Sea in northeastern Germany, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a vacation hot spot for Germans but is virtually unknown to US tourists. That’s about to change with the arrival of the American Tourism Society late next month. Hey, it’s Meck-Pom for short! And did know that Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg is the namesake of the city of Charlotte located in the County of Mecklenburg, North Carolina? More on this from Tobias!

Absinthe Minded
Donald Link, Chef/Owner of the Herbsaint and Cochon Restaurants in New Orleans, Louisiana
This is the story of the making of a great chef. Donald Link is a native born Louisianan whose culinary education extends east to his German heritage and west to California schools. You’ll learn about his two fantastic restaurants in New Orleans: the Herbsaint (named after an absinthe-like liqueur) and the Cochon (which means “pig” in French). Chef Link will also give us a brief lesson on the THC-like qualities inherent in a 150 proof bottle of absinthe!

Woodstock Hits 40!
Wade Lawrence, Director of the Museum at Bethel Woods (Woodstock), New York
Like, man, can you believe it’s been 40 years since a million+ freaks and hippies descended on Max Yasgur’s farm in upstate New York for one of the greatest rock concert marathons of all time? It’s all available for you to experience at this totally far out new museum! And don’t forget to get your tix for the next big music gig at the performing arts center there, too! Woodstock is still rocking, man! Heavy!

Introducing the Smile Ambassadors
Kyle Post and Stacey Doornbos, Smile Ambassadors of Orlando’s 67 Days of Smiles
OK, let’s see you do it: Experience 100 of Orlando’s top attractions and venues in 67 straight days. Make you want to smile? How about getting into all those attractions for free? What if we PAID you to do it and, say, we even throw in a FREE condo to live in while you tackle this challenge? Are you smiling yet?!

Surf ‘n Safari
Martin Warioba, Founder of Omong'we Travel & Tours in Tanzania, Africa
You will have an absolute blast on safari in Tanzania. Imagine the Serengeti Plains with mass migrations of wildebeest and zebra. You’ll see elephants, lions and jackals roaming free in the breath-taking Ngorongoro Crater, not to mention the herds of hippos in nearby Lake Manyara. You’ll be hot, tired and dusty after three or four days of this blissful romp through some of the most beautiful parks and preserves in all of Africa. What a perfect time to hit the beach for a little R&R! Here is the company that can do it all for you.

We have been talking much this year about the Corporate Council on Africa. I have been invited to present Interactive Tourism Marketing at the  upcoming 2009 US-Africa Business Summit in Washington DC in late September. This is the biggest event of its kind and we can expect well over 2,000 in attendance. The Summit runs Sept 29 - Oct 02, 2009. Please join me there!

Thanks for stopping by and we will be in California this week, so please give us a shout, we answer all email and we welcome your comments and suggestions.

Have a great week and remember, 'keep it under 90'.

Warm regards,
