Sulariman, Correspondent Asia Pacific, eTurboNews, and James W. Foster, COO of APG Global Associates. Sunday April 27, 2008

We spent an informative week in Kuala Lumpur with today's experts in the airline business. We heard from Ralph Kaiser, the President and CEO of Universal Air Travel Plan, say that fuel was 51cents a gallon in 1991 and now is almost $4.00 USD in 2008. He expects, as do many of the conference participants, that ancillary income from the airlines will become increasingly important. This means the airlines will continue to unbundle their products, stripping the offering down to a seat an upselling everything from pillows to extra leg room to hotels, car rentals and insurance packages.

AND WHY IT WILL AFFECT YOUR TRAVEL PLANS IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

Last year we saw Air Canada regroup from a bleak outlook by revamping their offerings  to include a click here button if you want anything more than a seat (and by the way, if want an add on, there is an extra charge). This model took them from the throes of bankruptcy to profitability. The acceptance of the audience was probably due to the spin of the message, a good job Air Canada! By contrast, just a few months ago, United Airlines announced they were going to unbundle the ticket price by making their customer pay for an additional bag. This sent the pubic into an uproar. Perhaps there is much to be said about how your tell your message to the public. While United announced a pay hike for the additional bag, Air Canada announced cheaper fares with add-on services available, and the same audiences reacted quite differently. Perhaps what the airlines need to invest in more than anything are Spin Doctors. Let's face it, the time is coming when airlines will have to raise their prices substantially because of fuel, and there seems no other way out. But what might soften the blow is how the airlines craft their stories. Anyone need a top notch PR agency to help tell their story?  Let us know!

Safe travels,

Sandy Dhuyvetter
