Gary Alten Proved That One Person Does Matter.

For those that know me personally, you know that my family suffered two great losses last year with my sweet sister Marcia and my nephew Gary Alten passing away.

    Gary Alten 1951-2008

Gary fought an amazing batter against cancer up until Dec 15, 2008. As a biology teacher and a conservationist, Gary spent many years devoted to the Peregrine Falcon and authored a petition to delist the bird in California.  By the time the commission was ready to hear the petition, Gary was too weak to represent himself. Three days before he passed away, on December 12, 2008 Patrick and I drove to Sacramento so I could testify to the California Fish and Game commission on his behalf. I was not alone, North American Falcon Association members/Conservation Committee members/California Hawking Club Directors Glenn Stewart and Bill Ferrier gave their testimony too. Less than a  half hour discussion took place, the commission then voted unanimously to de-list the bird off the endangered species list! At the time of the delisting presentation, The Commissioners requested that the California Hawking Club plaque honoring Gary be displayed on the overhead monitors during the historic vote.  It was a day, I will not forget. This was a huge triumph for Gary as he worked tirelessly on this project for 7 years.

The California Hawking Club recognized Gary Alten for his achievement in creating a petition to remove the Peregrine Falcon from California’s endangered species list. Undaunted by the time, effort, and research involved in creating this petition, Gary accomplished this task alone. Without such an endeavor, falconry access to wild peregrines in California would be impossible. Because of the monumental struggle involved in creating this scholarly report and the profound effect it could have on California falconers for generations to come, the CHC has instituted the Alten Award, named in honor of its first recipient. This award will continue to recognize major accomplishments by California falconers who advance our art and sport.  The California Fish and Game Commission unanimously approved Gary’s petition to delist the Peregrine on December 12, 2008.
Gary was honored with this very special Achievement award just a couple weeks before his passing.

Sandy after the petition was granted
in Sacramento Dec 12, 2009

We are constantly learning from the people around us and we celebrate Gary and Marcia's life. We are thankful for the health of family and friends and the opportunities that lay before us.

Safe travels and we'll catch up again next week.

Warm regards,
Sandy Dhuyvetter
